As a tourist, I am always eager to immerse myself in the culture of the places I visit. I want to eat their food, walk their streets and speak their language. What I’ve always found quite interesting is the way people putt around their city centres. London has its famous black cabs, New York City, its yellow ones. Europeans love their vespas, while South East Asians tend to get around by rickshaw.

Road Trip to the Four Corners: Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah

A Road Trip Planner may not be able to journey to the four corners of the Earth in one lifetime, but a road trip to the Four Corners of the U.S. is certainly achievable! Make sure this road trip makes it on your “Places To See” list because it’s the only place in the United States where four states meet.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: An excellent time to plan a road trip to this region is during the Fall because the red, orange and brown of the landscape will remind you of Fall Colors. Late Spring is also nice as is the summer if you have a tolerance for dry heat and have an ample supply of bottled water.
WHAT STATES MEET WHERE? Southwest Colorado, Northwest New Mexico, Northeast Arizona and Southeast Utah. There’s even a Four Corners Monument to mark the spot. Hand, hand, foot, foot & you’re officially in four states at once.
WHAT KIND OF TERRAIN CAN I EXPECT TO FIND? The Four Corners is actually part of the Grand Circle (which includes the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, Bryce Canyon National Park, Zion Canyon National Park, Capitol Reef, Natural Bridges, Hovenweep, Arches National Park). What you’ll find is plains stretching into the horizon in golden hues. And russet plateaus jutting up out of the earth in chaotic yet curiously patterned ways. This terrain is ancient; a land of Native Americans, a western frontier set in a rough and tumble landscape.
WHAT KIND OF ACTIVITIES CAN I DO THERE? This region offers such variety that it makes a great trip for families, couples, or a group of friends so you’ll have no trouble filling your Road Trip Planner with activities suited to your age and activity level. Explore places like archaeological digs, cliff dwellings, historic railroads, and western towns. Two of the corners are in the Navajo Nation and the Ute Mountain Indian Reservation. You’ll also find an abundance of National Parks in this region.
HIGHLIGHTS IN SOUTHWEST COLORADO: Cortez is considered the archaeological center of America and is the near the Mesa Verde National Park. It’s the first national park set aside to preserve the works of people, in this case, the ancient Puebloans and its history spans 14 centuries. FESTIVALS: Check out the festivals happening year round in this region like the Mesa Verde Country Food, Wine & Art Festival, the 9th Annual Mesa Verde Country Indian Arts & Culture Festival, or the Ute Mountain-Mesa Verde Birding Festival.
HIGHLIGHTS IN NORTHWEST NEW MEXICO: A different Southwest flavor can be found in New Mexico. Sparsely populated with a strong blend of Spanish, Mexican and Native American cultures, some parts of New Mexico may very well give you a sense of what the pioneers saw when they first cast their eyes over this mountain-desert land. Farmington is the closest city to the Four Corners but I’d add Santa Fe and Albuquerque to your road trip planner to enjoy the different ambiences found here. BONUS ACTIVITY: Take a ride on the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway, the world’s longest aerial tramway and glide above deep canyons and over breathtaking terrain for a unique vantage point.
HIGHLIGHTS IN NORTHEAST ARIZONA: For a deep Navajo experience, add Monument Valley to your road trip planner. Explore the rock formations, buttes, mesas and canyons in this tranquil valley. Some of these spires pierce the sky like needles (excellent photo op). BONUS SIDE-TRIPS: Further west, but well worth the 3 ½ hour drive is Lake Powell, a popular swimming/boating destination. And from there, you’re only 2 ½ hours away from viewing the Grand Canyon’s south rim, a spectacular natural wonder.
HIGHLIGHTS IN SOUTHEAST UTAH: Here’s where you’ll find the “Old West”. Bandits, cattle rustlers, outlaws, and the lawmen who tracked them down to justice; all called this part of Utah their home. Add Moab to your road trip planner for a real Wild West experience at the Bar-M Chuckwagon Live Western Show, which includes the Bar-M Village, a dinner show complete with a cowboy supper. BONUS FEATURES: Three major national parks also call this region home: Arches National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park. Even closer to the Four Corners is the Canyondlands National Park, also a popular spot.
Exploring the Four Corners is truly a rewarding experience. The Wild West flavor combined with the Navajo and Ute cultures, infused with Puebloan history and all this set against a starkly etched landscape will give any Road Trip Planner a good taste of the Southwest.

Colorado: More Than Just A Place To Ski

Colorado is incredibly beautiful. There are forested mountain slopes, clear, swift flowing streams filled with trout and open plains populated by deer. But when winter comes, Colorado truly becomes a special place. Located in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States, Colorado is a wonder to behold.
Each year, millions flock here to take in the scenic views of the Rockies and pleasant climate. The eastern two-fifths of the state is flat and is used to raise cattle, Colorado’s leading agricultural activity. Overall, Colorado has the highest average altitude of any of the states. It is about 6,800 feet above sea level. That is why millions flock to Colorado ski resorts each winter.
Colorado is a true winter wonderland. Although the state averages 15 inches of precipitation annually, the mountainous regions get over 20 inches each year. This means there is always enough powdery snow drifting down onto the many Colorado ski hotels.
From the time the ski season opens in November until it ends in April, the ski slopes are enveloped in gleaming white snow. If a five month ski season and a chance to hob knob with the beautiful people who inhabit Colorado ski resorts is not enough to get you to the Centennial State, then the discount ski holidays offered by the travel operators will be. There is sure to be a package to fit any budget.
Ski vacations are not all tailored for bargain shoppers. Some people come to the Colorado ski resorts to get away from the hoi polloi and spend quiet time with a loved one. Many of these seclusion seekers have unlimited budgets, and Colorado has quite a few ski resorts that can provide the perfect romantic getaway. For superior ski slopes, Colorado has a number of cities like Aspen, Arapahoe Basin, Steamboat Springs, Winter Park and Vail. There the jet set frolic in the snow, cuddle in steaming outdoor hot tubs, or embrace in front a crackling fire as snow blankets the earth around their hideaway.
Colorado has much more to offer visitors. You can climb the Rockies and see the headwaters of the mighty Colorado River. There is Grand Lake, a lake formed by glaciers. There is also Summit Lake located over 12,700 feet above sea level. Colorado is also has stunning rock formations. Any visitor must see the famous Pike’s Peak. Other picturesque locations include the Garden of the Gods, Devil’s Kitchen, and Window Rock and of course the Colorado National Monument, a group of truly unusual rock formations in western Colorado. Yes, you can ski in Colorado, but you can do so much more. Come to Colorado!

Ski Beaver Creek, Colorado
Ski Beaver Creek, Colorado
For those of you that have skied Deer Valley in Park City Utah, you’ll find something in common here at Beaver Creek Ski Resort. Luxury — and lots of it!
Beaver Creek is a gated purpose built resort influenced by St. Moritz in Switzerland and Cortina in Italy. The rich and famous ski here and many have homes here as well. It’s an easy two hour commute west on I-70 from Denver International Airport and close to Vail, Copper Mountain, Keystone, Breckenridge, and Arapahoe Basin.
The mountain features 149 trails serviced by 17 lifts. The base and summit elevation is 8,100 and 11,440 feet respectively, with a 4,040 foot vertical drop. The terrain is 19% beginner, 43% intermediate, and 38% expert. Grouse Mountain will challenge you with their steeps and bumps, Larkspur and Rose Bowl is wide open and mostly intermediate, Bachelor Gulch is manicured and gentle, Strawberry Park has plenty of gentle groomers, and the learning area has the Buckaroo gondola to wisk the kids up to the top of the learning area.
If you’re up to it, check out the Birds of Prey World Cup downhill race course.
The Beaver Creek grooming staff grooms the slopes twenty hours a day, seven days a week. Fifty-two operators work ten-hour shifts. The result: lots and lots of pure corduroy for your skiing pleasure.
Beaver Creek resort is made up of 3 separate and distinct villages: Beaver Creek village, Bachelor Gulch, and Arrowhead Village. At Beaver Creek Village you’ll find an ice rink, boutiques, art galleries, bars, and restaurants. The center piece of Bachelor Gulch is the Ritz Carlton. The resort consistently wins awards for its food, wine, service, and lodging. For some late night excitement, check out Coyote Cafe, a popular locals hangout. Here, you’ll enjoy live music, great drinks and free ski movies.
The Allegria Spa at the Park Hyatt, Bachelor Gulch Spa at the Ritz Carlton, or Spa Struck in the Charter at Beaver Creek offer all the treatments and facilities you come to expect in a world class luxury setting and are sure to please the most discerning traveler.
One of the biggest downsides to this resort for day skiers is the parking. Free parking is located away from the slopes and requires shuttle transport. Valet parking is available but for this, you’ll pay around if you include tips for drop off and pick up.

Vail and Colorado Golf Courses…..
Vail and Colorado Golf Courses…..
Does Colorado have golf courses? It’s like asking…are there needles on a pine tree?
When you start searching Colorado maps and resources the first thing you notice are the great number of golf courses in the state of Colorado.
In the mountains, the Aspen area is sparse in the number of golf courses compared to the Vail area, This might have something to do with former President Gerald Ford giving attention to Vail over Aspen. As you might remember, former President Ford was a big golf fan and player. Although not a tournament-class player, he had fun playing as long as you weren’t in his line of fire with a stray golf ball. For the younger people… Gerald Ford had a bad habit of hitting bystanders.
What about the Denver area? Wow, a whopping number of golf courses are listed, over 40 featured ones alone. It makes you wonder if there’s any room for a city.
Colorado Springs is no slouch. There are about 40 golf courses around that area too and the weather tends to be nicer due to a little thing called the Palmer Divide near Monument. The divide is about 3,000 feet above Denver and 2,000 feet or so above Colorado Springs. Storms coming from the north tend to stall on Palmer Divide and so your golf outing is less likely to be interrupted. Storms from the west are different. Better get off the golf course before lightning decides you’re its next target.
The Fort Collins area shows about 30 golf courses and the Pueblo area about 10. Pueblo isn’t as big into golf as its northern neighbors. Possibly because of its working class roots as a steel town and the surrounding agricultural areas. For some reason, steelworkers and farmers usually find better things to be doing than golfing.
The Grand Junction area has about twice as many golf courses than the Pueblo area. Do you suppose tending orchards in Grand Junction (peaches, cherries, apples) gives them the desire to play golf more?
The Grand Lake area is also thin with golf courses. But what golf courses there are there have to be good. Just being in the area is fantastic…what with the huge (by Colorado standards – this isn’t Minnesota) Grand Lake and gorgeous Rocky Mountain National Park nearby.
If you want to get away from the maddening crowds and experience the Rocky Mountains at its best, check out the Telluride area. Gasps of awe are guaranteed in this part of the Rocky Mountains.
A word of warning though. If you were from a lower elevation state I’d suggest using an electric cart. Playing golf five to nine thousand feet higher than you’re used to, can make 18 holes feel like a 30-mile marathon. There is a good thing though. Your golf ball will travel farther than you’ve ever hit before thanks to that thin air.
That being said, whenever you golf in Colorado, you’re bound to have a good time. The weather is great (over 300 sunny days per year) with a gorgeous scenery that can’t be beat anywhere else in the world.
