City Guide to Bradford

]]>
Bradford is a large northern city, with a long and documented history, and a population of almost 300,000 people.
Numerous important historical buildings and monuments, including mills and factories and one of only two World Heritage Sites in Yorkshire, make the city a first choice of many history-seekers and the city never fails to reward the effort! Bradford is also home to the most visited museum outside of London.
The vibrant cultural life in Bradford, and award-winning restaurants, make the city an ideal destination for a relaxing evening out or weekend away; but the city also boasts a lively nightlife and music scene for those seeking entertainment a little more adventurous!
Like many other areas in the region, millions of pounds are pouring in for regeneration and the city offers an exciting up-and-coming feel.
History
Bradford was granted city status at the end of the nineteenth century, but its history is documented back to the thirteenth century. Bradford formed an important manufacturing area during the Industrial Revolution, but suffered the collapse of the manufacturing industry during the twentieth century. There have been signs of improvement over the last twenty years, but the rate of unemployment remains below the national average.
The National Media Museum is the most visited museum outside of London, exploring developments in photography, film and television, and housing the largest cinema screen in the world.
The Industrial Museum is based in an eighteenth century mill, and houses artefacts exploring the area’s manufacturing past.
The nineteenth century village of Saltaire was built to house the local mill workforce, and is one of only two World Heritage Sites in Yorkshire.
Art Galleries
Bradford has numerous galleries including Cartwright Hall with comprises four separate galleries, displaying British works of art from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and a selection of South Asian arts and crafts.
Salts Mill is a shopping and arts complex, located in a converted Victorian mill in the village of Saltaire. There are four galleries in the complex, including David Hockney Gallery, a gallery exploring the area’s heritage and a third displaying operatic costumes and masks.
The Manor House, in Ilkley, and the Arts Centre, in Bingley, host a range of temporary exhibitions.
Theatres
The Alhambra Theatre is Bradford’s sole large-scale theatre, and housed in an impressive Victorian building. The theatre regularly hosts large-scale touring productions, including West End plays and performances by the Royal Shakespeare Company.
The Alhambra Studio is located next door, and stages small-scale performances.
The Bradford Theatre-in-the-Mill is adjacent to the university campus, and offers small-scale productions, and drama and technical workshops.
Theatres specialising in musicals and concerts include St George’s Hall, The Tamsin Little Music Centre and The Little Priestley.
Restaurants
Amongst Bradford’s award-winning restaurants is Weaver’s. The restaurant comes highly recommended by Good Food Guide, AA, Michelin and Hardens, and serves traditional and contemporary British cuisine.
Bradford’s ‘Curry Mile’ is home to more than twenty Indian and Asian-influenced restaurants, of which, The Kashmir is widely regarded as the best by customers, and Mumtaz Paan House is recommended by Good Food Guide. Kipling’s Indian restaurant was awarded the ‘Best in Britain Award’ by a customer vote.
Chino Thai serves Chinese and Thai dishes in an up-market environment, and offers seating for 100 people.
Pubs/Bars
CAMRA recommends numerous Bradford pubs in the city, and named The Junction ‘Pub of the Year’ in 2006. Other contenders were Haigy’s and Fighting Cock.
Brewery Tap is a rock pub that presents live acts two or three times each week, offers a free jukebox and various drinks offers. Bradford’s longest serving music venue also comprises a poolroom and beer garden.
Fubar is a cocktail bar and tapas restaurant, boasting a vast selection of cocktails, wines, liqueurs and beers, with a chic and stylish interior that belie its low prices.
The Sun Hotel is one of Bradford’s most popular gay bars, and features regular DJs, drag acts and pub quizzes. There is a lounge area, pool and games room, secluded beer garden and rooms to rent upstairs.
Nightclubs
Rio is a rock club and live music venue, one of many Bradford nightclubs, open three nights a week and presenting a selection from 80s and punk to indie and goth. Admission is free before 9:30pm and drinks are cheap.
Run by the owners of The Sun Hotel, Club Life is a very popular gay club, offering the best of sing-along classics and ‘cheesy pop’. Admission is free on Thursdays, and a variety of DJs perform on Fridays.
Lingards is a house, speed garage and techno complex, comprising a pre-club bar, Ascension nightclub and Subterranea nightclub. There are club nights at the complex twice a week.
The Love Apple is another complex; this one comprising a cafe, bar, nightclub and art exhibition space. The club specialises in non-mainstream music, and hosts live music performances.
Shopping
The Kirkgate Shopping Centre is home to 65 shops and a large market on its top floor. There are 550 parking spaces, and the centre is easily accessible in the city centre. It is open every day.
The Oastler Shopping Centre is a market in the city centre, comprising 80 stalls and shops and trading in fresh fish, meat, fruit and vegetables. There are also cafes and markets. St James Wholesale Market is located out of the city centre, and is the place to find exotic food produce.
Salts Mill is a converted Victorian mill, now a shopping and arts development. The development is home to numerous shops trading in unusual goods, a cafe, a diner and four art galleries.
Sports
The Richard Dunn Sports Centre is the largest of forty leisure centres in the city, and comprises a 25-metre pool and leisure pool activities for children, a gym, and a sauna, a solarium and squash courts. The centre is open every day.
The city university offers an impressive range of sporting facilities over three venues. The Sports Centre houses most of the facilities, the Laisteridge Lane site is home to squash, football and hockey courts/pitches, and the Woodhall Sports Ground provides sites for football, rugby and cricket.
There are forty golf courses in Bradford; including Queensbury Golf Club, an 18-hole course with a lounge and bar on-site.
There is also a branch of Hollywood Bowl in the city, comprising 24 ten-pin bowling lanes.

Introduction:
Set on the coast of Hampshire, south of Winchester, this is a place that abounds with a fascinating heritage. The Romans, who established it as a seaport, founded Southampton approximately 2,000 years ago. This was the port from which the ill-fated Titanic had set sail on her maiden voyage in 1912. Even though the place was affected during the Second World War, Southampton has grown sturdy with huge docks built for the cruise industry. The core of the modern city is now based around the City Centre.
Places of Interest:
Southampton is famous for ports, art galleries and museums. The place has a story to tell everywhere you visit.
Museum of Archaeology – This museum recount’s Southampton’s history with displays from prehistoric, Roman, Saxon and medieval times.
Medieval Merchants’ House-This is one of the earliest surviving merchants’ homes in the UK. Tourists can take in a glimpse and see how life was 700 years ago thanks to the authentically recreated furniture and overall ambience.
Solent Sky – Solent Sky, where the world’s first seaplane was built. It is also the place where the Spitfire fighter plane, used heavily in the Second World War, was born.
Southampton City Art Gallery – Situated in the heart of the Cultural Quarter, it contains over 3,500 works of art spanning six centuries of European culture. The 20th century British art remains the main attraction here.
Things to do:
Southampton is a great place to shop and dine. Be it enjoying the nightlife or being a part of special events, this city has always had lots to offer.
Shopping – The West Quay complex on West Quay Road offers shoppers a good selection of high street retailers, designer boutiques and traditional shops. The West Quay Retail Park brims with the choicest of retailers that are normally found on the outskirts of towns. Other good shopping areas include the Marlands Mall, Portland Terrace and the Bargate Centre, off the High Street on East Street.
Restaurants – There are many restaurants offering an eclectic mix of cuisines. The rates are competitive and the price range for a three course meal for one, including a half bottle of house wine or equivalent (where available) is:
(over £40)
* (£30 to £40)
** (£20 to £30)
* (up to £20)
Tipping of around 10% for a three-course meal with wine is given customarily in up market eating places. During weekends most restaurants require prior booking.
Transport – The airport is situated 7km (4 miles) northeast of Southampton on the outskirts of the city. A good rail network links Southampton with the main rail station in the city. The National Express operates regular coach services connecting Southampton with various destinations in the UK. The National Express terminal is located in the centre of the city on Western Esplanade within a stone’s throw from the Central Railway Station. Taxis can be hailed on the street or at ranks at the railway and bus stations. First Southampton is a company that operates a comprehensive network of buses linking all parts of the city. Bus no. 12 operates between the city centre and International airport.
Nightlife – From conventional old alehouses to stylish bars and nightclubs, Southampton has a flourishing nightlife with a huge chioce. The Red Lion, 55 High Street, or The Duke of Wellington, 36 Bugle Street; are two of the traditional old alehouses having a decent bar menu.
Special events – There are events like Titanic Memorial (Sep 4), the Southampton Boat Show (Sep 16-25) and Trafalgar Day with trips on the SS Shieldhall on the Solent (Oct 21), which are specific to Southampton. In Euroblade, October, Southampton’s city streets are closed off and turned into a track for inline skating. The event is not a race and is open to skaters of all ages and abilities. It assumes dimensions of a festival atmosphere with wigs, crash helmets and fancy dress.
Food and Drink:
Langley’s Bistro and Garden Room Café -This is a non-smoking restaurant that serves the best of food and wine. The ambience as well as the great customer service is worth writing and raving about.
Kuti’s Brasserie – Situated in the centre of the town, Kuti’s is also a place that has great ambience and offers authentic Indian and Bangladeshi food.
La Cantina – With dishes like fajitas, tacos and fiery chilies, this place makes for a good party environment.
Olive Tree – It offers a selection of the best European dishes.
The Woodlands Lodge Hotel – A 15-minute drive away from the city centre, this place gives you the choicest food in the most scenic of surroundings.
Hotels and Accommodation:
Southampton, being an important sea port, receives visitors by the ferry-load, which means there is no shortage of places to choose from. The hotels given below are categorized into four different pricing categories and are based on the cost of a double room per night with breakfast and including all taxes:
(over £120)
* (£80 to £120)
** (£40 to £80)
* (up to £40)
The services offered by the larger hotels will usually include a gym, pool and extensive business and conference facilities.

Glasgow is already a top tourist destination for many travellers in Europe. If you were thinking about going on holiday to Glasgow, you may be excited to learn about Glasgow’s world famous art collections. Glasgow has some of the best shopping in Europe. There is a Lighthouse, the Gallery of Modern Art of Glasgow and plenty of museums and interesting entertainments. If you were thinking of taking a holiday in the UK, try visiting Glasgow.
Places of Interest in Glasgow
To get started, let’s look at some places of interest that are popular with Glasgow tourists.
Glasgow Cathedral – Glasgow Cathedral was built around the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. During the Reformation period in 1560, it survived the threat of being torn down and is considered to be the only still standing authentic cathedral from that era. Its gothic style structure makes for a wonderful architectural gem to discover on your travels. It is open for viewing through almost any time of the year.
The Lighthouse – The Lighthouse in Glasgow is a national centre for architecture and design. It was once a newspaper office for the Glasgow Herald. Over 700,000 people have already visited it since it opened its door. It now contains galleries, shopping, a couple of cafes and a miniaturized version of “Wee People’s City”.
The Gallery of Modern Art – The Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow is one of the most popular modern art galleries in the UK. It houses contemporary artwork, most with the theme of addressing social issues. It is open nearly all year long and children are welcome. Ask for a free-guided tour.
Glasgow Tower – For a unique architectural gem, try visiting the Glasgow Tower. It is the first tower ever created that revolved full circle, and not just the top. The entire tower can circle around from the base. There are displays inside about Glasgow’s past and displays plans for future developments. From the viewing platform at the top, visitors can see out as far as forty miles.
Things to Do in Glasgow
Shopping and activities in Glasgow make for an enjoyable time while visiting the city. Check out these can’t miss features.
Merchant City Area – The area called Merchant City contains all sorts of shops from clothing to books and antiques and more. Not to mention the various restaurants and cafes to stop by for a cuppa.
Clubs in Glasgow – If you are looking for a club for dancing or meeting the locals, try some of the more popular ones. Sub Club is located on Jamaica Street. The Arches is on Argyle Street. The Garage is on Sauchiehall Street. Each one of these clubs offers up unique fun and can be easily found.
Pubs in Glasgow – For a collection of authentic United Kingdom pubs, Glasgow offers a variety of them. Looking for real ale or live music? There are a variety of pubs to fit every preference. For example, if you want a more fashionable crowd, head for Bar Soba on Mitchell Lane.
Where to Eat in Glasgow
A holiday in Glasgow isn’t complete until you have a meal at one of the more famous restaurants. Try a few of these suggestions.
Aurora Restaurant – For food fashioned after Scottish cuisine, try Aurora Glasgow Restaurant on 2 Port Dundas Place. All dishes are cooked to order, including delectable delights like roast salsify with shellfish vinaigrette or Gressingham Duck breast. Dinner may cost only £30 per person.
16 Bryres Road – For a Brasseire menu, you will want to try out 16 Bryres Road. You won’t have any trouble finding it, though it is a small restaurant. It is a favourite for locals in Glasgow and for good reason. It was listed as one of the best restaurants in Glasgow in a number of magazines. You can find Confit lamb shoulder, grilled fillet of halibut along with prune and almond chocolate brownies with clotted cream listed on the menu.
Bluu – Bluu in Glasgow offers a European menu for its patrons. Located on 60 Trongate Albion Street, Bluu’s menu consists of ravioli with spicy pineapple salsa and delicious Iced Malteser parfait with white chocolate sauce. Bluu’s tasty meals will range from £20 – £40.

It caters to both tourists and business travelers with its charming landmarks such as Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf and Chinatown and its state-of-the-art business facilities and convention venues such as the Moscone Convention Center, thus contributing to the city being rated as a top-class tourist destination and major financial centre in America.
Before you can truly enjoy your stay in this vibrant city, be sure to make sufficient plans with regards to your accommodation and where to stay so as to avoid the pitfalls that may befall unprepared travelers. You can read on for some general advice about hotels in San Francisco and the different types of accommodation that can be found in various parts of the city’s downtown area.Â
Hotels of different architectural styles and price rangesÂ
In San Francisco, a place well-known for its diversity, you can find hotels of different styles of architecture and price ranges to suit every budget and taste. You can take your pick from rustic boutique hotels to modern, sleek hotels, and from budget bed and breakfasts that are easy on your wallet to deluxe hotels that embody the pinnacle of luxury â your choices are endless.Â
The luxury hotels are generally situated in the most central areas near the cultural and business centre of the city in areas such as Union Square and boast an array of spacious rooms and suites to choose from, in addition to high-end amenities such as spa services in the guest rooms.Â
On the other hand, the budget bed and breakfast lodgings are generally found in less accessible areas such as the Golden Gate Park but exude a charm reminiscent of Victorian times. Do note that hotel guests in San Francisco are levied a room tax of 14% which is added to the total bill when you check out.Â
Some useful advice about choosing your hotel’s locationÂ
Here is a word of advice to all guests when choosing the location of your hotel â it is advisable to go for a more central location, such as Union Square and Fisherman’s Wharf, nearer the city centre.Â
This is because even though you may save a little money if you stay at the outskirts, the heavy traffic on the roads and the lack of parking spaces, especially on the streets, make it a difficult task to get to town and park there. This is further compounded by the high parking fees charged by the hotels, hence it would be better not to rent a car but take taxis and public transport to get around instead. Â
Furthermore, all the tourist attractions are situated close to each other, so it will be more convenient if you stay in the city centre as there are many affordable and popular forms of public transport to get to them easily if you decide not to walk.Â
These include the train network consisting of the light rail and subway, an extensive bus network consisting of trolleybuses and conventional buses and of course, the San Francisco cable cars which offer a unique way to get around and are an attraction in itself. Below is a breakdown of the different areas where you can consider staying in San Francisco.
Union Square
Union Square is at the centre of all the action in downtown San Francisco, where you can easily find numerous shopping, dining and cultural venues with easy access to Chinatown, the Moscone Convention Center and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among other attractions.Â
While both Union Square East and West boast an excellent selection of hotels, you will find more luxury hotels in Union Square East, while you are more likely to find 2- to 4-star hotels for a lower cost in Union Square West. This area is very well-served by San Francisco’s public transport network.Â
Nob HillÂ
If you are looking for a pampering stay in a luxury hotel, Nob Hill may be the place for you. Some of the most luxurious hotels in the city can be found atop this hill, which is one of the highest, and offer excellent panoramic views of San Francisco.Â
Fisherman’s Wharf and the Waterfront
This is a lively tourist spot which is home to numerous seafood restaurants, souvenir shops and street performers. If you enjoy staying in an area with a fun atmosphere while enjoying easy access to nearby attractions such as Chinatown, this could be where you might want to stay. Although there are less low budget choices here, you can choose from a number of mid-range to five-star accommodation.Â
Cathedral Hill
For budget travelers seeking cheaper accommodation yet still prefer to be situated near the downtown area, you can consider staying at Cathedral Hill. Although there are no tourist attractions in this area, you can take the cable car to areas such as Chinatown, Fisherman’s Wharf and Union Square.

Vacation Planner:
Having visited Ocean City as a child, than as a parent, and now living here with my grandchildren has given me a unique look at what Ocean City has to offer. From a day trip to a yearly vacation I will offer my advice on things I have enjoyed over the years.
Things have changed over the course of 50 years but not as much as you may think. Gone are the sand dunes and wilderness that existed north of 60th Street when I was a child. They have been replaced with high-rise condominiums, strip malls, hotels, restaurants, and residential buildings of every possible configuration.
The boardwalk now runs from the Inlet at the southern edge of Ocean City to 26th Street. Most of the “action” is from 4th Street-south. If you want to stay where the action is I recommend staying on the boardwalk. This is a great area if you have teenagers or just like the hustle and bustle atmosphere. Even the boardwalk can be further broken down by just how much action you want. The further you get from the inlet the more relaxed the boardwalk becomes. See my article, Where to Stay, for a complete listing of what each area of Ocean City is like.
While not everyone likes the same entertainment, I’m going to assume that the major reason for coming to Ocean City is the ocean. Our beaches are fairly consistent throughout Ocean City with fairly wide expanses, very clean, and lifeguards stationed every block with communication systems connecting the entire beach. The one major exception to this is from the inlet to about 6th Street; this area has an extremely wide beach area with volleyball and play areas. This is good for daily visitors and children but difficult for the elderly and handicapped. Access to the beach from the end of the boardwalk-north is limited to paths made through the sand dunes at the end of each street. Rentals of chairs, umbrellas, and boogie boards are available on every block entrance to the beach (as of this writing). There are plenty of places to eat lunch all along the boardwalk but make other plans for lunch if you stay off the boardwalk. See beach rules for a list of do’s and don’ts.
To get away from the action and have a more relaxed day at the beach I recommend Assateague Island State and Assateague Island National Park. Although the actual park starts at the inlet you must drive about 15 minutes to get to the parks entrances. Take Route 50 west, than Route 611 south. Route 611 ends at Assateague Island. Here you will find the State Park and the National Park. The State Park is somewhat more expensive to enter but has a snack bar. I personally prefer the National Park because it has more to offer. While the State Park is limited to a snack bar, the National Park has canoe rentals; tours, a crabbing pier, and a 4 wheel drive only area (permit required). Fires are allowed on the beach at night from the low tide mark to the high tide mark. Both areas offer lifeguarded beaches, picnic tables, grills, rest rooms, and showers. Campsites are available at both parks but advanced reservations are almost always required.
Entertainment doesn’t stop at the beach.
The boardwalk offers rides, games, arcades, shops, and of course food for the kid in all of us. Here again, the action is centered from 1st Street to the inlet. To entertain the kids and the kids at heart I would suggest Splash Mountain at 30th Street and Coastal Hwy. There are several types of water slides, a lazy river, a wave pool, snack bars, and my favorite the Rain Forest. The Rain Forest is fun for everyone; it has super sized squirt guns to shoot people as they walk by (my favorite-I get in battles with people from 6 to 60), water slides, a giant pirate hat that slowly fills and dumps its contents on everyone below, and water squirting at you from everywhere. Trust me; this giant sized water version of a jungle gym is worth the admission price by itself. It is so fun that the lifeguards wear rain hats and coats.
There are numerous race tracks for every age and miniature golf courses featuring something for everyone. For a complete list of fun things to do visit our entertainment page.
For the adults there are nightclubs catering to every age group and bars with many different themes. Seacrets is so popular with young adults that it has its own radio station while Fager’s Island is popular with the more sophisticated crowd. In between is everything from karaoke to beach bars.
A rainy day can be spent; going to the movies, going shopping, visiting the indoor pools located at many hotels, sitting on your balcony watching the ocean, taking a day trip to historic Berlin, Md., or just enjoying a long lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants.
Dinner in Ocean City for most of us is kind of like Family Feud. There are so many choices and nobody ever feels like the same thing at the same time. My family starts discussing dinner plans early so reservations can be made if required. During the peak season keep in mind that lines at popular restaurants can be long (even if the food is just so-so). My personal recommendations are: 1-Marina Deck, excellent crab soup and seafood dishes, and it’s on the water 2-Waterman’s Seafood Restaurant, very good crab feast and seafood 3-Nick’s Original House of Ribs, very good ribs and beef 4-Harpoon Hanna’s, very good seafood and on the water (service somewhat slow) 5-The Crabcake Factory USA, the best crab cakes, 6-Higgins Crab House, very good crabs and good seafood, 7-Bull on the Beach, excellent pit beef and good beef entrees, 8-Adolofo’s Italian Restaurant, excellent Italian dishes (expensive), 9-Embers Restaurant, very good seafood and prime rib buffet, 10-Ponzetti’s Pizza, my favorite pizza, 11-Lombardi’s, another good pizza and Italian restaurant, 12-Sakura, excellent Japanese steak house, 13-Phillip’s Crab House, good seafood (worth a visit but no longer the best seafood in Ocean City), 14-Outback Steakhouse, the same food you get at home but it’s good when you get tired of trying new places. These are my favorite restaurants. There are many great choices and many different ideas about what a good meal is. A good restaurant to me is a combination of very good to excellent food with reasonable prices, good service, and a varied menu for the entire family. Please leave reviews for restaurants you visit during your stay to help others choose a good restaurant.

Tourist City Guide to Birmingham
Tourist City Guide to Birmingham
Birmingham’s history stretches back to the sixth century, but is currently Europe’s newest city. The second largest city in England, Birmingham is home to more than a million people and continues to expand on its success.
The city has much to offer visitors seeking quiet evenings out, lively nightlife, breathtaking history and cultural entertainment, and is located close enough to picturesque countryside to offer the best of city and rural life.
Birmingham has been dubbed ‘the shopping capital’ of the country, and with over 1000 retailers in the city centre alone, this title is certainly deserved. There are more than a dozen shopping centres in the city, demonstrating the city’s continued growth and power to attract visitors.
History
Birmingham’s history is documented back to the sixth century, when a supply of water, coal and iron were discovered in the area. Birmingham developed rapidly, and was already regarded as one of the important manufacturing areas in England by the start of the Industrial Revolution.
Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is home to an incredible collection of art works and artefacts, documenting 400,000 years of history. The city’s other museums include Blakesley Hall, a converted sixteenth century manor house.
Other important historical buildings include Weoley Castle, a thirteenth century manor house; The Old Crown, a fifteenth century pub; the thirteenth century St Martin’s Church; and the Grade I listed nineteenth century Town Hall.
Art Galleries
Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is home to the largest collection of Pre-Raphaelite works in the world, as well as fine and applied art works by the Old Masters and Impressionists. A free bus links the gallery to the city centre.
Birmingham’s arts and media quarter is named after the factories that once occupied the five-acre site: The Custard Factory. As well as numerous other media companies, creative enterprises and cafes, The Custard Factory is home to a number of small art galleries showcasing a variety of works.
The Ikon Gallery is a unique collection of multimedia art works, comprising sound, film, photography and art installations.
