Queen Sirikit Park: a tranquil escape in the heart of Bangkok

]]>

Originating as a small trading post at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River it was given the status of capital during the Siam period. Today Bangkok is one of the largest cities in Asia and is considered one of the foremost international business and trading hubs.

Over the years Krung Thep Mahanakhon as it is known by the locals has developed rapidly and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Hosting a wide array of both traditional and modern attractions around the city, Bangkok prides itself on catering to every travellers taste.

Queen Sirikit Park situated in the heart of Bangkok is one of these numerous attractions. Built to commemorate her majesty Queen Sirikit’s fifth birthday anniversary, it is one of the premier parks in the heart of Bangkok.

The park was built on land adjoining the pristine grounds of the Golf Course owned by the state railway of Thailand. The first phase of the park spanned 22.40 hectares and was opened to the public in December of 1996.

Merging sculptures and landscapes with nature’s beauty, the park is meticulously maintained by a dedicated team from the H.M Queen Sirikit Park Foundation. The park can be divided into several areas serving different functions and focusing on different aspects of nature.

At the centre of the park lies a tranquil pond built incorporating the English letter “S” and the Thai symbol “?”. On the outer edge, circling the pond grows Golden Shower trees that bloom vivid yellow flowers that highlight the area.

Within the park complex lays the Chatuchak Botanical Gardens. Here a vast collection of local and international species are showcased for visitors to admire, including species named after members of the royal family and those taken from royal gardens itself.

The Lotus and Water Lily Yard is one of the most tranquil sections of the park. Shaped like a water lily, the enclosure houses several local and international varieties of lotus.

Thailand’s rainforests are home to some unique and colourful species of plant. None are more famous than the Yan Da Oh. This plant was brought down from the Budo Mountains, whose leaves bloom according to season with the most unusual yet captivating colours. The Yan Da Oh flows from soothing velvet to a vivid bronze from August to September and shiny silver in October. It is one of the most popular attractions in the park.

Children are in for a treat at the park with the Children’s Discovery Museum. Combining fun with raising awareness, the museum comprises of 8 sections made up of insightful exhibits and fun recreational activities.

As can be seen, Bangkok has a lot to offer visitors to this charismatic city. Accommodation options are numerous with many 5 star hotels Bangkok to choose from. Shangri-La Hotel Bangkok in particular is one to highlight, combining both the warmth of the Thai capital with peace and tranquillity of a tropical retreat. This Bangkok luxury hotel is centrally located and offers a wide choice of rooms and suites with breathtaking views coupled with world class amenities and renowned Shangri-La service.

Universal studio’s to set up theme park in India

Reliance ADA Group is in talks with universal studios to build a 400 acre theme park either in New Delhi or Mumbai in lines with other Universal’s parks but with an Indian twist.

Big Entertainment is the media and entertainment unit of The Reliance while Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADA) and Universal Studios are units of General Electric’s NBC Universal. They could reach a deal this year to build a 400-acre theme park and resort in India at a cost of 1.5 billion USD, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Reliance ADA Group, controlled by billionaire Anil Ambani, would have full ownership of the venture. However, it would pay Universal Studios royalties and fees for using content linked to its popular movies like Jaws, E.T, Spider-Man and the Harry Potter franchise.

The theme park would be built in the same lines as Universal’s parks in Los Angeles, Orlando, Singapore and Japan but with an Indian twist. It will also include an array of roller coasters rides, shops with movie-related merchandise, housing a number of hotels.

The park is being considered to be built either near New Delhi or Mumbai, though there is a high possibility of park being built in and around Mumbai’s western suburb Goregaon-home to Bollywood Film City as Mumbai is what the Ambani family calls home.

Reliance is reported to have received the Indian governments support for the project as it will create thousands of jobs and host about 50,000 visitors a day.

Universal Studios is also building a 2.7 billion USD theme park in Hwaseong City, 40 kilometres south of South Korea’s capital city Seoul. It includes a golf course, condominiums, Water Park and resort, touted to be the largest theme park in Asia.

Burswood Park – a Tranquil Heaven in the Heart of Perth

Travellers in search of a destination to unwind and forget all about the demanding requirements of everyday life should plan a trip to laid-back Perth. This easy-going city blessed with stunning beaches, amazing attractions and lush green parks is one of Western Australia’s most favoured tourist destinations, drawing in hundreds of foreign travellers to its shores on a regular basis. Some of the attractions you simply cannot afford to miss while in Perth are the Aquarium of Western Australia, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Subiaco Oval, the Western Australian Museum and many more. The Burswood Park which is also located in Perth is another attraction well worth a visit.

Located on Resort Drive, just minutes away from Perth City Centre, Burswood Park is a picturesque, open expanse of land which was originally a garbage dump until the site was cleared and created into a beautiful park with much to see and do. There are several sections of the park which should definitely be visited by traveller, such as Citizen of the Year Lake, Swan Shell, Swan Fountain and the iconic Symbol of Goodwill between Nations. You can also go on a guided tour around the park which will give you a chance to discover all there is to know about this picturesque oasis of tranquillity.

The Heritage Trail at Burswood Park consists of a remarkable array of sculptures which each have a story of their own to tell the visitor. While each of these sculptures have been created in honor of great personalities, some of the most popular include the Henry Camfield statue, the Paddy Hannan statue and the statue of the Storyteller.

The jogging trail in the park is ideal for an early morning run and will also give you the chance to spot a few birds if you’re lucky.  A golf course can also be found at the park, giving you the chance to perfect your swing and sharpen your game.

Somerset St Georges Terrace offers convenient accommodation near this favoured recreational park for the discerning traveller, in the heart of the city with luxurious serviced apartments Perth is proud to call its own.

Once upon a time flying was magical. It was the stuff of dreams. A magic carpet ride could take you thousands of miles away to a different world. Even when holiday travel began, the idea of arriving in a foreign land only hours after leaving seemed incredible, luxurious, glamorous. It would be easy to make this about leg room or in-flight meals, the battle of the armrest and all the little politics of flying, but I think it’s more than the logistics which have ended our romance with flying.

Relax and Explore American History at the Battery Park

Edit Article |

Battery Park gets its name from the historical use of the area by the British and Dutch as an artillery battery. Previously used as a fireboat and the Hope garden, is Pier A, at the northern tip of the area. Adjacent to the US Coast Guard Battery Building, and on the opposite side is the Battery Garden Restaurant. There are a number of water ferries available alongside the water front that takes visitors to the Statue of Liberty and the Ellis Island. There is a stop in the New York Water taxi waterway between the Statue of Liberty and Pier A.

The Battery Park city is a typical planned community residential area on the north west aspect of the garden. This was constructed during the 70s and the 80s and also has the Robert F Wagner park and the battery city Promenade. Today, the bikeways, promenades and the Hudson River park, all spread until the Hudson shore. Currently a bikeway is under construction and it will extend between the Hudson River and the east river sections of the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway. The old US Customs building, now functional as the National Museum of the American Indian and the district U.S. Bankruptcy Court, is located on the north east stands. The south east tip of the garden has the Peter Minuit plaza that is facing the South Ferry Terminal of the Staten Island Ferry.

On December 8, 2005, New York City officials declared that during the construction of a new South Ferry subway station in Battery Park, the workers discovered the remains of a 200 years old stone-wall. During the same works, many other historical remains came forth that included at least four different walls and almost 250,000 artifacts. Some selected sections of one of the excavated walls were put on public display for some time in the Castle Clinton.

Battery Park is located nearby to several interesting New York attractions and visitors can explore the area at leisure. Nearby, you’ll find several accommodations options, and it’s recommended to stay at a luxury hotel. New York is a big metropolis and you’ll find plenty of things to do while you are there The Premier Hotel is an excellent luxury hotel in New York you many want to try out.

East Coast Park – “Recreation for All”

Edit Article |

]]>

The great thing about Singaporeans is that they don’t do anything halfway – even when it comes to rest and recreation. The East Coast Park is a recreational oasis which bears ample testament to the city-state’s exuberance and ingenuity and reverence for their environment.

What was once a barren wasteland encroached upon by sea has now been converted into the largest park and most popular park in the nation, in true Singaporean fashion. Spanning 185 hectares at the southeast end of the island, the park lives up to its slogan of “Recreation for All” with a host of attractions eclectic enough to draw all kinds of holiday-makers; from picnickers soaking in the sea breezes, to hikers, bikers, fitness freaks of all colors, water-sport enthusiasts, foodies, bird-watchers and eco-tourists. The last is due to the fact that the Singaporean architects left large tracts of reclaimed land deliberately untended, so that wild flora and fauna grew out on its own in and around the park environs, attracting migratory birds of all shapes and sizes.

It is a telling illustration of the park’s sheer size and variety that the same grounds which boast patches of natural forest is also home to delicately-manicured golf ranges, holiday chalets, camp sites and bowling alleys. Those who simply wish to laze around have ample space to soak up the sun, stroll and picnic in the 15 kilometers of surf and the spas which are peppered over the area. The high-energy crowd will benefit from the jogging trails, tennis courts, cycle tracks and the more cutting-edge attractions such as Xtreme Skatepark, Big Splash@ East Coast Parkway, Bedok Jetty and the Cable Ski Park.

The Park is also a foodie’s delight. Its Seafood Center draws the local families almost every weekend addicted to their exotic barbeques and satays flavored with the sunset and starlit vista of the coastal horizons.

It goes without saying that the best way to optimize your holiday is by choosing the right place to stay at the right price. Singaporehotelseye.com is a travel portal which will help you find great Discount Singapore hotels as well as the hottest packages and offers from hotels in Singapore. The East Coast Park is easily accessible from Singapore hotels on Orchard Road or via most bus routes that take you through the city center. For holiday-makers with families in tow, there are few attractions that match the magnetism and energy of East Coast Park.

Stanley Park in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Edit Article |

]]>

Long recognized as one of the great parks of the world, Stanley Park is one of the crown jewels of Vancouver. Stanley Park is Vancouver’s first park and one of the city’s main tourist attractions and is an evergreen oasis of 400 hectares (1,000 acres) close to the downtown core. Its natural west coast and First Nations atmosphere offers a back drop of majestic cedar, hemlock and fir trees which greets visitors from all over the globe and transports them to an environment rich in tranquility. The park also is home to various wildlife and its features appeal to the naturalist, the plant lover or one who would do nothing more than relax in beautiful surroundings.

Stanley Park was opened in 1888 by the British Lord Stanley of Preston who later became the Earl of Derby. The largest city-owned park in Canada and the third largest in North America, Stanley Park is more than ten percent larger than New York City’s Central Park and almost half the size of London’s Richmond Park.

Each year the park attracts an estimated eight million visitors, locals and tourists alike, who come for its recreational facilities, gardens, seawall and ocean views. The famous seawall path which circles the park is used by more than 2.5 million pedestrians, sight-seers, cyclists, and inline skaters every year. Most of the park is forested with old growth forest and an estimated half million trees that can be as tall as 76 metres (250 ft) and hundreds of years old. There are also approximately 125 miles of trails and roads throughout the park, which are patrolled by the Vancouver City Police horse mounted squad. The Project for Public Spaces has ranked Stanley Park as the sixteenth best park in the world and sixth best in North America.

A great number of quality recreational facilities are also available in Stanley Park, including a pitch and putt golf course bordered by the spring-blooming Ted and Mary Greig Rhododendron Garden. At the Park’s heart is the formal Rose Garden surrounded by mass perennial plantings looking their very best from April through September.

If you are planning a trip to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, beautiful Stanley Park is a must see destination. With its beautiful rose gardens, scenery and world class facilities and restaurants, Stanley Park will be a memorable experience.

Planning a trip to France with the kids but don’t know where to go? Looking for theme park excitement in Europe to rival that of America? Then why not visit Paris – not only is it one of the most beautiful cities in the world, but it also has two great theme parks nearby, which kids will love. Enter the cartoon world of Gaul at Parc Asterix or mingle with Mickey, Minnie and company at Disneyland Paris.

Parc Asterix

Introduction

This quintessentially French theme park brings to life one of France’s most popular comic book cartoons of all time – Asterix de Gaul, a small and quirky warrior living in Armorica in 50 BC, in the only part of Gaul not to be conquered by the Romans. The amusing stories in the comic books focus on Asterix, his kind-hearted and somewhat rotund best friend Obelix, and the local druid Getafix (Panoramix in French) who prepares magic potions for them.

Location

The park is located approximately 30 kilometres (20 miles) north of Paris, north of Charles de Gaulle airport on the A1 Paris to Lille motorway.

Attractions

There are some exhilarating and hair-raising rides, all loosely based on a classical themes – there’s the Thunder of Zeus – the largest wooden rollercoaster in Europe, the swinging Roman galley ship, the Trojan horse and the death-defying Goudurix loop-the-loop ride, as well as flying chairs, log flumes and other popular theme park favourites.

Shows

There’s always plenty of entertainment going on when you want a break from the rides. Meet your favourite characters at the costume parade – they’re held several times a day, or go back in time to a Gaulish Village Festival, where there are lots of great activities and funny goings-on daily. The dolphin and sea lion show is captivating, and the Panoramix Magic Show will leave you spellbound. And that’s not all – there are several different stage performances throughout the day, in which Asterix and his friends get involved in great high jinks and adventures.

Restaurants

Being a French theme park, the food here is of course excellent and there’s a huge variety of eating places to choose from, whether you’re looking for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a snack. There’s a great pizzeria, a tasty creperie and a delicious burger bar to name just a few. All the restaurants are themed too – there’s a medieval banqueting hall, a circus buffet in a colourful big top tent, a Gaulish tavern and a Roman villa.

Shops

You can get Asterix souvenirs in all shapes and sizes, from t-shirts and mugs to helmets and swords. There are stalls and boutiques all over the park, so you can get whatever you want, whenever you want. If you’re looking for other gifts and souvenirs, there are some wonderful shops selling Egyptian, Roman and Greek themed ornaments, crafts and clothes.

Accommodation

Hotel des Trois Hiboux is the only accommodation within the park itself, but it’s a wondeful place to stay and offers great value for money. The facilities in this three-star hotel are excellent – there’s a cosy lounge with a roaring fireplace, a games room for children and a bar with a terrace. Nearby hotels include Novotel, Kyriad, Campanile and Mercure, so you’ll never be stuck for somewhere to stay.

Disneyland Paris

Introduction

Disney’s only theme park in Europe is very similar in style to the parks in America. The Magic Kingdom comprises four different lands, all of which converge on Main Street USA – an early 20th century themed street with horses, trams and vintage cars. Fantasyland is a world of fairytales and is aimed at young children. There’s Sleeping Beauty’s castle, Snow White’s house and Alice in Wonderland’s maze. Peter Pan, Dumbo and Pinocchio also put in an appearance. Frontierland is a gold rush themed area with Pocahontas Indian Village, a shooting gallery, Big Thunder Mountain and Wild West legends all around. Adventureland sweeps you through marvellous exotic lands from Aladdin’s Enchanted Passage to the Pirates of the Caribbean lagoon. Discoveryland is a wonderful area of science and space.

Attractions

All the most popular attractions from the American parks are recreated in Disneyland Paris. There’s the terrifying Space Mountain, the Mad Hatters’ Teacups, It’s a Small World, the Pirates of the Caribbean, Big Thunder Mountain and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Shows

No trip to a Disney theme park would be complete without a parade where you can meet your favourite Disney characters. There are parades in various parts of the park all day, so you’ll never miss out. Some of the excellent stage show performances include The Lion King, The Tarzan Encounter and Winnie the Pooh and Friends Too.

Restaurants

Every zone has its own range of eating places to cater for all tastes and appetites at any time of day. Some of the best ones are Victoria’s Homestyle Restaurant in Main Street USA, which serves wholesome, traditional American dishes such as meat pie and chocolate brownies. The Cowboy Cookout in Frontierland is a mouth-watering barbeque restaurant with country music and dancing, while Buzz Lightyear’s Pizza Planet serves pizzas in an intergalactic atmosphere.

Shops

You won’t have any bother finding a souvenir of your favourite Disney character – there’s a huge selection of soft toys in many of the shops dotted around the park, from old classics like Winnie the Pooh to the space-age Buzz Lightyear. The shops in Discoveryland have some weird and wonderful scientific gadgets and gizmos, while Adventureland has exotic gifts and souvenirs from far-flung lands. Budding cowboys can kit themselves out at the Bonanza store in Frontierland, from Stetson hat to boot spurs.

Accommodation

It’s rather expensive to stay in the resort itself, although for a real treat it is very good fun. Disneyland Hotel on Main Street USA is the most expensive, while Davey Crockett’s Ranch is the cheapest option. The cosy log cabins are about quarter of an hour’s drive from the park. Other hotels outside the park include the Radisson SAS, Kyriad, Holiday Inn and Pierre et Vacances Hotel.
