If you’re anything like me, you like to have a great time skiing or snowboarding. I’m more into snowboarding, and as quite a few other people, I enjoy going to resorts where there are less people, and the site is less commercialized. Among the few places which still remain this way, you can count the Alaska skiing and snowboarding resorts. Most people don’t think about going to Alaska because there are so many ski resorts in North America, so why travel so far? That leaves you with opened slopes and half empty lift lines.
Let’s take a quick look at some of the best of Alaska’s skiing or snowboarding resorts:
1. Moose mountain, Alaska ski resort – Moose mountain is over 1250 ft feet of vertical, and has both beginner slopes as well as advanced slops. Due to the mountain’s southern exposure, the area is shielded from the prevailing Northeasterly winds, and thus receives hours of sun each day. This makes the mountain 20-30 degrees warmer than the nearby city.
Base Elevation: 680 ft
Summit Elevation: 1,987 ft
Vertical Drop: 1,307 ft
Skiable Area: 200 acres
Annual Snowfall: 70 in
Longest Run: 7,920 ft
Snowmaking: 0 %
Number of Lifts: 14
2. Eaglecrest Ski Area – the Eaglecrest ski resort is a community-owned ski resort that is located 12 miles from downtown Juneau on Douglas island. The ski and snowboard season at Eaglecrest runs from early December through mid-April. Most of the terrain is suitable for beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders
Base Elevation: 1,200 ft
Summit Elevation: 2,600 ft
Vertical Drop: 1,400 ft
Skiable Area: 640 acres
Annual Snowfall: 300 in
Longest Run: 10,560 ft
Snowmaking: 6 %
Number of Lifts: 4
Uphill Lift Capacity: 2,600 per hour
Types of Lifts: 1 Tubing Lift, 1 Surface Lift, 2 Double Chairs
Number of Trails: 31
3. Alyeska Resort – The Alyeska was voted one of the best ski resorts in the world by the ski magazine. This resprt has a great snowboarding park, and it’s also very suitable for families.
Vertical drop:2,500 feet
Summit:3,939 feet
Lifts: 9
Trails:68
Longest run:10,560 feet
Annual snowfall:720 inches
snowmaking:37%
skiable area:1,000 acres

Snowboarding by itself is a fun and safe sport which is basically a cross between skiing and skateboarding. Using a single large snowboard, enthusiasts rush down slopes through the snow. The feel and balance is quite different from regular skiing since navigation through the snow is achieved on only a single board, and unlike skateboarding, snowboarders let gravity do all the work of propulsion for them

Bansko – Bulgaria, a Ski Resort With so Much More to Offer Than Skiing. History and Future Meets Here

Bansko, is the number one ski resort in Bulgaria, while being much more than just another ski resort. Bansko ski resort has more to offer than just skiing or sitting in lodge by the fireplace watching others ski. The non-skier can have a great time in Bansko, while others enjoy the ski slopes. The best time to go is from December 15 to May 15, if you plan on skiing. There are luxury hotels and luxury apartments in the construction stage, meanwhile there are about forty family hotels. The closest airport is Sofia Airport, 97 km from Bansko. Rental cars, shuttles, taxis and vans are available for the trip to Bansko. The Gondola ride from town to the slopes takes about twenty-five minutes.
Live folk music often accompanies the local cuisine in the taverns, cafes and restaurants. There are discos and clubs for nighttime entertainment. The town has many cultural and historic monuments, souvenir shops, and artists and silversmiths to watch as they create their beautiful pieces of art, jewelry and more. Tourists can visit the remains of the ancient fortress the lakes, waterfalls and caves in the National Park Pirin and the mineral springs at Bayoni-dupki-Djindjiritsa. Take short trip to the Rila Monastery and the city of Sofia, the home of Borovets ski slopes.
Talk with your travel agent or go online to arrange a ski trip to Bansko. Everyone needs a passport and some visitors need a visa. Check with your agent or go online to get application forms and information.

The Best Skiing in Canada

One of the best ski resorts in Canada has to be Banff in the Rocky Mountains and state of Alberta. There are a number of reasons for this and it is not all about the skiing, although that is obviously a very important factor. For Banff the quality of the skiing is beyond question but you can also enjoy great apres ski, a place with natural beauty and a little bit of history.
Banff the town resides in Banff national park which is a world heritage site and a beautiful part of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. In the town you can explore the history of the native American Indians, eat and drink in the famous Banff Springs Hotel and have access to a loads of different types of accommodation, restaurants and bars all within an hour and half of the international airport and city of Calgary, once home to the winter Olympics. Needless to say your comfort and apres ski experience will be well catered for.
Now down to the important business of skiing, one of the biggest benefits of being based in Banff is that you can take out a tri-area ski pass and make the most of three separate ski resorts, each one superb in it’s own right.
* Lake Louise
* Sunshine Mountain
* Mount Norquay
The quietest of the three, closest to Banff and my personal favorite is Mount Norquay, it is probably a little smaller than the other two but provides some really good slopes for all levels of skier, great lifts and hardly any queues, not that you would be queuing for long at either of the other 2 resorts either as they also have the sort of fantastic lift systems that you normally associate with North America plus skiing for all levels including beginners, intermediates and advanced.
To access the resorts from Banff does mean catching a bus, but as you are picked up for the most part right outside your hotel and most of the hotels will normally store your ski equipment for you, then this really isn’t a problem. The time on the bus passes pretty quickly and you are on the slopes before you know it with hardly any energy expended.
When we visited the temperatures were a very chilly -40C with wind chill, this was pretty extreme however as we were unlucky enough to arrive in the coldest week of the Canadian winter that year. But it is worth bearing in mind and making sure you have got kit with you to suit those sorts of temperatures, basically you have to cover up all of your skin as any skin that is exposed to the environment is likely to end up seeing frost bite as a result of the extreme temperature. This isn’t as bad as it sounds, a simple scarf pulled up to a pair of goggles and a woolen hat or similar pulled down to the top of your goggles will normally do the trick. Also worth noting that the cold is generally very dry and as such does not feel as biting as the damper climate in Europe where it can feel much colder at temperatures not even close to the ones described.

Skiing Cross-country

A cross-country skier in full flight can use up almost 1000 calories per hour. In terms of the effort required, the skills levels and the duration of some competitive races, there is little to compare with an international cross-country skiing event, and when combined with rifle shooting, as in the sport of biathlon, the demands become even more complex. But the sport does not have to be undertaken at such demanding levels. For people young and old, skiing through the snowy countryside at a relaxed pace provides beneficial levels of exercise, whilst at the same time introducing the participants to the spectacular scenery of the great outdoors.
The history of cross-country skiing is a long one, even having been recorded as a method of transport in prehistoric times. In Scandinavian countries they have documented use of the transport method as far back as the early 13th Century when it was used to track and hunt animals.
For the armed services, cross-country skiing is a fundamental part of basic training for any group that may have to operate in snow-covered terrain. As well as being a basic transport and survival technique it provides the environment for teamwork and physical exercise too. The sport is used so often in the disciplines of the armed services in so many countries, that the top athletes often hail from those groups. Another reason is that the training needs to be of such duration and usually in specific locations, that only the armed services have access to the facilities required to train and compete at the highest level.
Location is an important consideration for cross-country skiing, but the perceived requirement for picturesque, mountainous and wooded areas covered in fresh snow may be slightly misleading. Obviously in an ideal world anyone would choose to ski in locations that provide those kinds of conditions, but if they are not available, people can still ski. Unlike downhill skiing, cross-country skiing does not require any gradients, removing the need for it to be based in mountainous or hilly areas, nor does it need any infrastructure like lift systems, which again open up many more areas. For geographies without the benefit of regular snow, a variety of skiing called roller skiing is also an option. Here participants used skis fitted with wheels and are able to travel across grass and tarmac surfaces. Popular venues in the UK are around rowing lakes and in city parks where the terrain is often completely level and traffic free. As we will see later, indoor cross-country skiing is now also becoming a possibility.
Alongside marathon running, some of the world’s biggest mass-participation sports events are cross-country skiing races. In Norway, the annual Birkebeinerrennet, a popular 54 kilometer race, nearly always attracts a full field of 12,000 participants. The race has been held for the past sixty years and the rules require athletes to carry a back pack weighing 3.5 kg, simulating the weight of the small child who was heir to the Norwegian throne and had to be rescued in similar manner back in the 13th Century. The speed of the competitors has slowly increased over the years as technique and equipment has improved and in 2008 the winner completed the course in less than two and half hours. In Switzerland the 42km Engadin Ski Marathon also attracts 12,000 athletes, and Sweden’s equivalent race, the 90km Vasaloppet, held in the north west of the country during the first week of March, manages to attract a field of 15,000 skiers.
A new form of cross-country skiing is gaining in popularity with those less physically able. Skijoring is a derivative where the skier is assisted in forward motion by being pulled along behind a snowmobile or even by a small team of dogs.
Cross country skiing is even moving indoors now, with the development of technology that allows snow to be generated and maintained at temperatures low enough for it not to melt. In the UK, several snow centres have been built over recent years and, although they are primarily designed for downhill activities such as indoor skiing or indoor snowboarding, they can also be used as training venues for certain aspects of cross-country skiing. At The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead, one of the slopes is dedicated to cross-country ski training at certain times, when skiers can use the facilities to fine tune their climbing and descending technique.
Primarily in Finland, but also in Sweden and Germany, facilities called ski tunnels have also been built. In a similar way, these tunnels allow cross-country skiing on snow to be enjoyed all year round. In Germany, the DKB Skisporthalle in Oberdorf provides a track loop of almost 2 kilometers in length. In Torsby, Sweden the ski tunnel is 1.3 kilometers in length and claims to be the longest in the world. The world’s first ski tunnel was built at the Vuokatti Sports Institute, Finland in 1998.
With increased access to facilities and suitable locations, cross-country skiing may be set to increase in popularity as more people become aware of this enjoyable sport and its health benefits.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Pinzolo, Val Rendena, Alpine Skiing for Beginners
The Val Rendena is a skiing region that is composed of various ski resorts, including the Adamello, the Dolomiti di Brenta, the Madonna di Campiglio, the Presanella, and the Pinzolo. The most famous of these ski resorts is the Madonna di Campiglio. But it is the Pinzolo that possesses ideal ski runs that would suit the new alpine skiers. At the lowest altitude of 800 meters and highest elevation at 2,100 meters, the news ski resort of Pinzolo offers excellent snow conditions.
Furnished with the most modern skiing facilities, the new ski resort of Pinzolo in Val Rendena, boasts an ice stadium for those who are also interested in winter activities other than alpine skiing. The ski resort also offers state-of-the-art skiing facilities, particularly the modern lifts and gondolas. And within the resort, the accommodations are plenty and luxurious.
The beginners, however, must realize that alpine skiing in Italy is not as convenient as mountain skiing in Salt Lake City. In reaching the ski area alone, the skiers had to show determination by utilizing a combination of different modes of transportation. The skiers had to fly in to Bolzano, the nearest airport where they can take a bus towards the center of the Val Rendena. The skiers may also take the train from Trento.
Upon arrival in Pinzolo, the skiers will find the best-groomed slopes, in which there is a total of 26 kilometers of ski runs. There are cross-country ski tracks located in the area named Centro Fondo Pinzolo-Carisolo. There is also a snow park for those who wanted to hone their skills snowboarding. And if some of the skiers wanted more challenge, they can easily cross towards the Madonna di Campiglio.
Skiing in the area of Pinzolo ski resort, despite the little muscle soreness that is expected with this winter sport, is very pleasurable due to the beauty of the region. The deep blue of the lakes delightfully complemented the silvery peaks of the mountains. The skiers will find a wide variety of unique and endemic flora and fauna within the Adamello Brenta Nature Park.
Interestingly, Pinzolo is not just a ski resort. It was made into a resort only in the 1960s and it is relatively new. Before it turned into a new ski resort, its religious past permeates every corner. Its culture and history will fascinate anyone who is curious to learn about of Pinzolo. For example, the locals still hold the infamous Trato Marzo. On the surface, it is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the younger people will ignite bonfires and sing folk songs. The infamous part is the shouting in which the youth announces engagements and marriages of unlikely couples. The visiting skiers might be entertained by this tradition but they would feel lucky and relieved not to live in Pinzolo.
Pinzolo is also the place where the Compagnia dei Battuti was first organized. It is a religious brotherhood formed by the pioneering spirit of the lay people. They built a unique church that still stands today. The walls of the church have murals and the southern wall featured the danza macabra (seven cardinal sins), the resurrezione di Cristo (resurrection of Christ), and the trionfo della Morte (triumph of death).
The pioneering spirit continues to dominate Pinzolo, even when it has turned into a famous new ski resort. The first Italian Alpine Rescue Unit was established in Pinzolo. The first Alpinists Society in the province of Trentino was founded in Pinzolo. The beginners of alpine skiing would know that pioneers surround them.

Arizona Skiing – Yes, Snow Skiing!
Arizona Skiing – Yes, Snow Skiing!
Ah, Arizona. Land of sun, scorching summer days and winter skiing fun. That’s right, skiing. Yes, Virginia, Arizona, known for tumbleweed snowmen, actually gets snow.
There are four ski areas to choose from in Arizona, all within a few hours drive from Phoenix, the capital of Arizona.
The most well-known of the ski areas in Arizona is located in northern Arizona, 7 miles north of Flagstaff. The Arizona Snowbowl offers 4 lifts and 32 trails for skiers and snowboards of all levels, and 2,300 feet of vertical drop. You can also test your freestyle skills at their Sunset Terrain Park which includes obstacles and spines. Lodging available in nearby Flagstaff or you can choose to stay at the ski resort at the Ski Lift Lodge & Cabins located at the base of the San Francisco Peaks. For reservations, call (928) 774-0729.
The largest ski resort in Arizona is located in McNary in Eastern Arizona. The Sunrise Park Resort is owned and operated by the White Mountain Apache Tribe, and is just a 4-hour drive from Tucson and Phoenix. You have for your skiing and snowboarding pleasure 800 acres on three interconnected mountains. Base elevation is 9,200 feet extending up to 11,000 feet. They offer 8 lifts and 65 runs for skiers of all levels, as well as a separate snowboarding area, cross country ski trails, and a Terrain Park featuring a snow half pipe, implanted wood and metal rails. The Sunrise Ski Resort is open from the first week of December through the first weekend of April. Night skiing begins January 2. Lodging is available at the 100-room Sunrise Park Lodge located on Sunrise Lake. Winter rates begin at 4 per night. Call (800) 772-7669 for more information.
Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley is located on Mt. Lemmon just outside Tucson, which is the largest city in Southern Arizona. Though smaller than the Arizona Snowbowl and Sunrise Park Resort, Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley offers 80 skiable acres, 3 lifts, 18 trails and a 907-ft. vertical drop. The longest run is 8,500 ft. Their trail ratings are: Easiest at 20%; More Difficult at 38% and Most Difficult at 42%. There is no cross-country or heli skiing available.
For those of you learning to ski, you might want to head up to the Elk Ridge Ski Area, formerly the Williams Ski Area located in Williams, Arizona, approximately 30 miles west of Flagstaff. The Elk Ridge Ski Area offers two lifts and seven trails. Elk Ridge is typically open Thursday through Monday, starting mid December. Thursdays is “skiing only” day. For more information call (928) 814-5038.
If you’re planning a visit to Arizona this winter, or if you live in Arizona, it’s nice to know a day of skiing is within driving distance. Who needs to hop a plane to Colorado or Utah when winter fun is right in your own backyard?
Skiing Arizona: Phoenix’s Ski Resorts
Skiing Arizona: Phoenix’s Ski Resorts
In a desert state and a city where the temperature reaches 38C on an average of 89 days during the year it may come as a surprise that you can ski on real snow, on real mountains, just a few hours from the city of Phoenix, Arizona.
Snowfall in Phoenix itself is extremely rare; the city only averages 5 days per year where the temperature drops below freezing and since records began, snow has only fallen seven times – the last of which was January 2001 (the first snow fall in 22 years).
However, much to the enjoyment of Phoenix’s skiers and snowboarders, there are several ski resorts within a few hours drive which are perfect for a day or weekend trip and should satisfy snow lovers’ cravings for the white stuff.
Arizona Snowbowl is located in the San Francisco Peaks in the Coconino National Forest, just a two hour drive from Phoenix. The ski area offers over 2,300 feet of vertical drop and 32 scenic trails that cover 777 acres and the Arizonan desert climate means the resort also enjoys plenty of sunny skiing days.
Those who prefer their skiing more sedate can visit the Flagstaff Nordic Center, located just seven miles north of Snowbowl. This area offers winter sports fans an extensive network of Nordic ski trails, as well as snowshoeing and sledding. Flagstaff also supports a healthy racing scene with competitions of various lengths held throughout the winter for cross country skiers.
The largest ski area in Arizona is Sunrise Park Resort, located in McNary in the Arizona White Mountains. Owned and operated by the White Mountains Apache Tribe, the areas comprises of eight lifts, and over 13 miles of cross country skiing trials.
And finally, if you want to ski in the most southerly ski resort in the Untied States, head for Mount Lemmon Ski Valley. Though Tucson is more likely to conjure up thoughts of sand rather than snow (several well-known beach resorts are located here) – just an hour’s drive away from the sea there is skiing and snowboarding to be found. The area is small, with a vertical drop of just 290m, 3 lifts and a ski-able area of 200 acres, but despite its southerly location, the resort still manages to open from December to April and the scenic views that overlook the area make Mt. Lemmon a popular ski destination.
Accommodation is available in (or near) all of these winter towns in the form of cabins, lodges and motels. Be warned though – people come here to ski rather than party so if you’re looking for a wild time, a better option would be to stay at a hotel in Phoenix and just commute to the ski areas during the day.

The 3 Villages of Whistler, Blackcomb, A Favored Destination For Skiing
The 3 Villages of Whistler, Blackcomb, A Favored Destination For Skiing
Whistler Village, also known as ‘The Village,’ is an award winning pedestrained village, nestled at the base of the two majestic coastal mountains: the Whistler and the Blackcomb. Located about 120 kilometers north of Vancouver in British Columbia.
The village is one of the three incredibly arranged pedestrained bases, other two being the Village North, alternatively known as the Marketplace, and Upper Village – a trendy area with a concentration of upscale lodgings, eateries, boutiques, and gift shops. Sometimes, all of these three regions, apart from Whistler Creek and Nicklaus North, together are referred to as Whistler Village.
Once you leave from the hustles and bustles of the Vancouver City and enter the mountainous north shore of the city, you would be taken through a single track, winding side road providing breathtaking vistas of the surroundings. After passing through the incredible Horseshoe Bay, you would enter the picturesque Sea to Sky Highway and as you pass the Squamish, you could climb high until eventually you reach the Whistler Village, which is perched at a height of about 2100 ft above the sea level.
Alongside the Whistler Village is the Upper Village, which is located at the base of the Blackcomb Mountain. Upper Village is within close proximity to the Lost Lake Park, which in turn is an excellent destination for enjoying cross-country skiing. A large number of ski in ski out destination can be found in this region. Located to the north of Whistler Village, Village North is within easy reach of superb skiing lifts of the Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains via a short walk or shuttle ride.
Whistler Creek is about three kilometers south of the Village, and from here the Whistler Mountain is easily accessible through the Creekside Gondola. Alternatively named Green Lake Estates, Nicklaus North is home to such attractions as the Nicklaus North Golf Course. Boasting of enchanting mountainous vistas, this area is close to the Lost Lake trail network.
The village of Whistler is akin to a small European mountainous town. Regarded as the commercial as well as social heart of Whistler – the Village is designed and developed with an arty glare and features some of the most outstanding West Coast architecture, cobble stone boulevards, and an array of shops and accommodation options. Additionally, the Village has a well-maintained community, with almost all facilities including recreational comforts, city hall, fire as well as police station, and museums and libraries.
The village is a much favored destination for skiing, and has been chosen as the venue to host the 2010 Winter Olympics. From the lifts originating from the heart of the Village, one can easily have access to more than 7000 acres of skiable terrain on the Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains.
Al though the area was primarily popular for skiing, the area has been now evolved into a year-round playground, providing superb options to enjoy both winter and summer activities. In summer, the Village becomes a golfers’ paradise. The central region of the village is a pedestrian square, which can be easily reached either via foot or a free shuttle bus service.
In addition, the area is also much famed for its Mountain Bike Park as well as its trail. Whistler Mountain Bike Park has to its credit attractions such as the Village Gondola providing choices for thrilling biking rides. From trails designed for beginners to trails for experienced bikers designed with obstacles, teeter totters, and ramps, mountain biking in the Park is truly a great experience.
In other words, trails found here are categorized into three sections such as Green Circle, which is primarily designed for beginners; Blue Square, which is designed exclusively for intermediates; and the Black Diamond, which is most suitable for expert bikers. For those not interested in biking or golf, Whistler has miles of well-maintained walking trails, a stroll along which would be a great way to the savor the natural beauty of the place. Above all, after a day or two of activities in the Village, don’t forget to take a rejuvenating spa treatment with any of the spa facilities seen here.
Surrounded by an amazing valley with a park consisting of beautiful beaches, picnic areas, astounding lakes, and hiking trails, the Village has a range of accommodation choices, from the huge chateau style buildings erected in quarried stone to small condominiums and mountain chalets. Above all, the Village is a great place for shopping, with 200 plus boutiques and gift shops.
